For student safety & liability reasons, KARATE SPARRING WILL ONLY BE AUTHORIZED WHEN UNDER THE SUPERVISION OF A BLACK BELT INSTRUCTOR OR DESIGNEE.  The purpose of sparring is to utilize recognized punching, kicking & striking techniques learned in class and applied during a controlled, match type situation with a fellow student opponent.  This is known as "kumite."  There should be no contact to the head area.  Light contact is allowed to the body.  It must be understood, however, that karate is a physical sport and controlled contact occurs during interaction between practitioners.  The following protective equipment must be worn during kumite; foam headgear, gloves and foot pads, shin pads (cloth or foam) & mouthpiece.  Males must wear a protective "cup."  PHYSICAL "HORSEPLAY" IS PROHIBITED.
